Upskilling the next generation in the high-value manufacturing industries

Building on Sheffield’s centuries-long history of metalworking expertise and innovation, the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is providing the manufacturing industries with the skills and technology to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Research infrastructure can act as a magnet for talent – attracting and training the next generation of researchers and enriching the national pool of specialist technical expertise. The University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has a global reputation for bringing together the expertise of universities and industry to provide practical solutions to manufacturing problems and, through the AMRC Training Centre, fostering the talent and skills to devise and implement them.

“Virtual worlds, intelligent robots, sustainable manufacturing; at the AMRC we’re making these ideas a reality,” says Steve Foxley, CEO of the AMRC. “The Centre is transforming industrial and economic performance in the high-value manufacturing sector by making step changes in productivity, increasing competitiveness, and developing new products and processes. Crucially, with colleagues at the AMRC Training Centre, we’re also working to upskill the workforce of tomorrow.”

Part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a consortium of leading manufacturing and process research centres across the UK, AMRC provides specialist capabilities from design and prototyping to additive manufacturing and structural testing in a range of industrial sectors from aerospace and automotive engineering to medical device development. It employs 450 highly qualified research and technical professionals from around the globe and works with industrial partners from small start-ups to global giants such as Boeing and Rolls-Royce.

The AMRC Training Centre works with approximately 500 apprentices at any point in the year for up to 400 industrial partners. “These include a two-year basic apprenticeship, a two-year higher apprenticeship and a foundation degree. As part of the University of Sheffield, the apprentices can then progress to Honours, Masters, EngD and PhD levels,” says Nikki Jones, Director of the AMRC Training Centre.

“We’re building on Sheffield’s centuries-long history of manufacturing expertise and innovation for the next generation. For young people in South Yorkshire and beyond, AMRC Training Centre provides the foundation for a rewarding career in some of the world’s most innovative industries.”
